Dear Mountainfilm attendees, During the seventies I was fascinated by Central Asia in  general and Tibet in particular
and made several journeys
overland in that direction.
However the temptations of
Greece, Turkey and the Near
East proved too strong and my
resolve too weak.The central Asian lure has only grown more compelling in the interim and thus my screening of a series of films from the Tibetan plateau this year has a two fold motive: firstly, so I, and all mountain film aficionados, can travel vicariously to that mythical land; and secondly, as the IOC has awarded the Chinese a chance to strut their stuff to the world behind the shield of the Olympic flame we should be allowed, in our own modest way, to protest the abuse of human rights that continues throughout China and most grotesquely in Tibet. Although this year has a political flavour Mountainfilm continues to celebrate the adventure, recuperation and inspiration to be found in wild places through our array of films and guests. The main auditorium in Taos, the TCA, is out of commission this year, so bear with us while we stage this year's festival in two smaller venues.
